Ilusiones de Percantas is an intimate, humorous and grotesque work where music, theatre and dance fuse. The archetypal characters described in the Tango lyrics such as Margot (the prostitute), Pipistrella (the low-class housewife), Palomita Blanca (the young tease), La Viuda (the widow), Los Mareados (the drunkards) and La Solterona (the Spinster) among others come to life through the rhythms of various Tangos, Milongas and Waltzes. The dance unfolds life stories in the old cafes in Buenos Aries where memories come into being.
“Ilusiones de Percantas” transports the audience to the Argentina
of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s.

TANGO INTERIOR
Photography by Todd Carroll

This body of work focuses on Tango as it is danced in the milonga clubs of Argentina. A far cry from the comic stylized dancing Rudolph Valentino popularized for Hollywood in the 1920’s, Argentine Tango is a visible cultural expression of the porteòos and their social fabric. Carroll captures the cultural encounter that celebrates the intense passion and playful characteristics of today’s Tango in Argentina. This body of work has been exhibited together with Anabella Lenzu’s Che, Tango, to present a full experience in the world of Tango. The documentary style of Carroll’s photographs complements Lenzu’s personal search and discovery, which harmonize perfectly together in the bittersweet music of Tango.

Todd Carroll invites you to view a selection of work at www.toddcarrollphotography.com where you can see not only the work on Tango, but other bodies of work as well.
